Things to do: If you can pull yourself away from Lake Wakatipu, and the adventure sports, well, there are plenty of other treats to find. Take the gondola up to Skyline Queenstown, there’s a restaurant up there for food and stunning views. The landscaped park of Queenstown Gardens offers more mountain views and a hiking track, Ben Lomond. If you want to jump on a bike, then Queenstown Trail is a great way to see Lake Wakatipu, and the Queenstown Mall offers shopping for a totally different experience.

When to visit: Summer is the best time to see this stunning region and city. Remember summer here is between December and February, and what’s more twilight kicks in around 10 pm, so you’ll get lots of daylight to enjoy your time there. Is anyone for a bbq?

For thrill-seekers: Queenstown is known for being a place that attracts thrill-seekers. And bungee jumping should be at the top of the list. For good reason too, it was AJ Hackett who pioneered the first commercial bungee here back in 1988.

• You may well head out on Lake Wakatipu, but did you know that the lake is S-shaped and that it’s the longest lake in New Zealand? Both the town and the lake are above sea level, 310m, but the deepest part of Wakatipu is below sea level! It’s a deep lake.

• Another interesting fact about Lake Wakatipu is that the water is among the purest in the world. It often gets a high rating, so yes, you can drink it, but perhaps not close to where boats are moored!

• New Zealand has often been used as a film location, and Queenstown is not left out. Mission Impossible Fallout was filmed here, standing in the mountains of Kashmir.
